Safety pins are a signature of punk aesthetics, and the tool of choice for our first ear piercing (but that’s a story for another time). Marc Jacob’s probably has done more than any other contemporary designer to reinvigorate punk. Even when his collections are girly or contemporary, some of that original punk flair can be found in his accessories (similar to the Alexander McQueen skull).
We were taken by this Ileana Makri version (bottom left), though the price is pretty high for gold plate. It’s modern and hung on our wrists in a nice way, working well with a few other bracelets on the same wrist. But $570 is pretty steep, so we wanted to see what else we could find.
Of course Marc Jacobs didn’t disappoint for costume jewelry (top left) and the earrings (top right) are much more delicate on than they look in picture. We were also surprised by how much we liked the chunky brass bracelet from Giles Brothers. It was much more casual than the golden pieces, but the weight was right and the clasp/safety pin design is pretty inventive.
We still covet the Ileana Makri one (just more our everyday style), but there are a lot more options than we originally thought.
